External units are commonly connected via USB. ♦ The default audio playback device should be set to your multi channel soundcard. On Vista : On XP : ♦ When your computer is told to use a multi channel soundcard, it knows how to split audio into different channels, more specifically : channels 1 & 2 - front channels 3 & 4 - rear channels 5 & 6 - center & sub channels 7 & 8 - rear 2 5.1 surround sound has less channels than 7.1 surround sound, but still enough for DJ Surface. On Vista : On XP : ♦ DJ Surface can then target the main mix speakers and monitor headphones by using different audio channels. You can hear the same track in the main mix speakers AND via the monitor headphones at the SAME TIME. They are perfectly synchronised enabling you to confidently blend different tracks together. ♦ A DJ setup might include something like the external Sweex SC004 USB 2.0 5.1 / 7.1 multi channel soundcard, the main mix goes to the normal front left/right speaker pair, channels 1 & 2, the monitor can be sent to channels 3 & 4. You listen to the monitor using headphones, adjusting the monitor loudness setting to suit your own ear. ♦ Any multi channel soundcard should work, however, we cannot guarantee compatibility with any particular make or model as systems, hardware and drivers change.
